We left Phuket early Saturday morning on flight to Chiang Rai via Bangkok. Once we arrived in Chiang Rai we found a little gem of a place away from the hustle and bustle of Phuket and away from the tourist track.
There are only about another 10 or so foreigners in town from what we’ve seen which when compared to Phuket it was like for every 10 people we saw 9 of them were Australian. We had a Thai massage and some drinks at a little bar in the afternoon once we had found a place to stay…which took a little longer than I thought as there were a few that sounded good.
Our first night we found the nightly markets to be ablaze until it started to rain which was is a common thing in Thailand…and it really didn’t seem to phase the locals at all and the markets kept running. The next day we got onto a local bus for less than $2 and made our way to the Thailand-Myanmar(Burma) border and went into Myanmar and had a look around and it appears to be destination that many Thais go to to buy cheap stuff. The people seemed to be a lot poorer than their Thai neighbours but again I’m taking face value they seem like another friendly Asian race who always treat visitors well. After a few hours around and a small tour of their local attractions, we made our way back to Thailand and back onto a bus to Chiang Rai. That night we walked around the markets and ate some local fair, then found a quiet little place for some drinks in a little back alley not far from our accomidation.
Today we are jumping on a bus towards to Chiang Mai…can’t wait.
